Lockport's Canal-Lock Origins and Its 40-Foot Elevation Drop
Lockport was platted in 1837 by the Illinois and Michigan Canal commissioners to serve as the canal's headquarters town, chosen because the terrain there dropped roughly 40 feet in elevation -- a drop steep enough to require canal locks, which is where the town's name comes from (Lock No. 1). Once the canal opened in 1848, connecting Lake Michigan to the Illinois and Mississippi river system, Lockport became a hub for milling corn, wheat, and other crops. Historic Lockport incorporated in 1853, and its fortunes tracked the canal's rise and its decline in relevance after 1900 as rail transport took over.

A town engineered around a 40-foot elevation change and a working lock system sits on ground that was purpose-built to move water, which means site grading and drainage patterns in Lockport are rarely simple.
