Plainfield and the Region's Defining Storm: the 1990 F5 Tornado
Plainfield is the oldest community in Will County, tracing back to the Walkers' Grove settlement James Walker established on the banks of the DuPage River in 1828, and the Village of Plainfield was platted just north of it in 1834 by Chester Ingersoll. On August 28, 1990, the region's defining storm-damage event struck: an F5 tornado -- the only F5/EF5 ever recorded in the Chicago area, and the only tornado of that magnitude ever recorded in the United States during the month of August -- touched down near Oswego around 3:30 p.m. and tracked 16.4 miles in about eight minutes, cutting through the Wheatland Plains subdivision and across Plainfield High School and St. Mary Immaculate Parish. It killed 29 people, injured 353, destroyed 470 homes, damaged roughly 1,000 more, and caused about $165 million in damage.
