Rockdale's Immigrant Roots on the Des Plaines River
Rockdale was settled by Slovenian and Lithuanian immigrants in the 19th century and incorporated as a village in 1903. During the 1930s, the U.S. Navy built ships along the Des Plaines River at Rockdale, work that depended directly on the village's river frontage. The community's population has shifted again since then, and Rockdale today includes a significant Hispanic population reflecting that ongoing demographic change.
A River Town With a Long Memory of Water
A village built around active shipbuilding on the Des Plaines River has never been far from the water table that comes with that frontage, and homes closest to the river still deal with elevated groundwater and seasonal high-water periods more than housing set back from the bank.
